Tuesday, December 1, 2009

Today's new releases will be arriving late this afternoon. The holiday threw our schedule off a bit. We're expecting Flaming Lips and Tom Waits (Live and Orphans) on vinyl. Meanwhile, I bought a 1000+ LP collection and I'm trying to sort it out. Lots of jazz vocalists. Billie Holiday, Chet Baker, etc. Not enough hours in the day right now.

Lots of new music this week...

Monster of Folk, Hidden Cameras, Islands, Brand New, Girls, Mum, Vic Chesnutt, Big Pink, Circulatory System, Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Tallest Man on Earth (LP, ltd to 1000), Teenage Bottlerocket, David Gray, Sonata Arctica, Times New Viking, Le Loup Family, Pearl Jam (contrary to the "only available at Target" advertising, we have the CD and the LP)

and new beer...

In addition to beers from The Bruery (see previous post), we now have another fine beer from Founders Brewing Company.

Founders Breakfast Stout
"You’ve got to love coffee to truly appreciate this phenomenal brew. Brewed with an abundance of flaked oats, bitter and sweetened imported chocolates, Sumatra and Kona coffee. We’re actually not sure if this is some type of coffee cake or a beer. Either way you can drink this ale with a fork. Breakfast Stout has an intense fresh roasted coffee nose toped with a cinnamon colored frothy head that seems to never fade and makes you wish breakfast could last forever."

Welcoming The Bruery to South Carolina!

Orchard White
"An unfiltered, bottle conditioned Belgian-style witbier. This hazy, straw yellow beer is spiced with coriander, citrus peel and lavender added to the boil and whirlpool. A spicy, fruity yeast strain is used to add complexity, and rolled oats are added for a silky texture."

ABV: 5.7%

Accolades:
BeerAdvocate Magazine, October 2008, "A" Rating

Black Orchard
"An unfiltered, bottle conditioned Belgian-style black wheat beer, or “black wit”, if you will. This dark but surprisingly light bodied beer is very drinkable while still having character and complexity. Chamomile is added for its floral aroma, while the coriander and citrus peel give the characteristics of a traditional witbier."

ABV: 5.7%

Accolades:
Los Angeles International Beer Competition 2008, Gold, Belgian & French Style Ale
BeerAdvocate Magazine, October 2008, "A" Rating

Saison Rue
"An unfiltered, bottle conditioned, Belgian/French-style farmhouse ale. This is a beer of subtlety and complexity, with malted rye, spicy, fruity yeast notes, biscuit-like malt backbone, and a slight citrus hop character. With age, this beer will dry out and will become more complex with rustic notes of leather and earth from the contribution of a wild yeast strain. Being a Saison, Saison Rue is ambiguous unto itself as it is a different beer when fresh and when aged. We hope you enjoy it in all of its incarnations."

ABV: 8.5%

Accolades:
Los Angeles International Beer Competition 2008, Gold, French & Belgian Style Saison
BeerAdvocate Magazine, October 2008, "A" Rating.

Autumn Maple
"Brewed with 17 lbs. of yams per barrel (in other words, a lot of yams!), this autumn seasonal is a different take on the “pumpkin” beer style. Brewed with cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, vanilla, molasses, and maple syrup, and fermented with our traditional Belgian yeast strain, this bold and spicy beer is perfect on a cold autumn evening."

ABV: 10%

Cat Power : A Good Woman
"Delves into the soul of this fragile but ferociously gifted young talent."

ABC3D
"This hand-size French alphabet book is as stylish as a pop-up can be... A-plus for drama and innovation." -Publishers Weekly

Story of Crass
"The first real history of the pioneers of anarcho-punk."

Kindling : James Jean
A paperback portfolio of 12" x 16" posters and a 24" x 16" gatefold poster.

09.09.09 @ 52.5

We are delighted to announce the release of the original Beatles catalogue, which has been digitally re-mastered for the first time, for worldwide CD release on Wednesday, September 9, 2009 (09-09-09).

We'll be stocking the entire catalogue at a reduced price during the month of September.

Each of the CDs is packaged with replicated original UK album art, including expanded booklets containing original and newly written liner notes and rare photos.
The albums have been re-mastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI’s Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilising state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment, carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this painstaking process is the highest fidelity the catalogue has seen since its original release.
The collection comprises all 12 Beatles albums in stereo, with track listings and artwork as originally released in the UK, and Magical Mystery Tour, which became part of The Beatles’ core catalogue when the CDs were first released in 1987. In addition, the collections Past Masters Vol. I and II are now combined as one title, for a total of 14 titles over 16 discs. This will mark the first time that the first four Beatles albums will be available in stereo in their entirety on compact disc.

Hogshead Records? Has a nice ring to it.
A hogshead is a large cask of liquid (less often, of a food commodity). More specifically, it refers to a specified volume, measured in either Imperial units or U.S. customary units, primarily applied to alcoholic beverages such as wine, ale, or cider.
After conversion to imperial measure in 1824, the hogshead became 52.5 imperial gallons.

Now in stock :

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies

From the Publisher : "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a zombie in possession of brains must be in want of more brains." So begins Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, an expanded edition of the beloved Jane Austen novel featuring all-new scenes of bone-crunching zombie mayhem. As our story opens, a mysterious plague has fallen upon the quiet English village of Meryton—and the dead are returning to life! Feisty heroine Elizabeth Bennet is determined to wipe out the zombie menace, but she's soon distracted by the arrival of the haughty and arrogant Mr. Darcy. What ensues is a delightful comedy of manners with plenty of civilized sparring between the two young lovers—and even more violent sparring on the blood-soaked battlefield as Elizabeth wages war against hordes of flesh-eating undead. Can she vanquish the spawn of Satan? And overcome the social prejudices of the class-conscious landed gentry? Complete with romance, heartbreak, swordfights, cannibalism, and thousands of rotting corpses, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies transforms a masterpiece of world literature into something you'd actually want to read.

Camera Obscura My Maudlin Career CD (LP delayed)
"On the title track of Camera Obscura's fourth album, My Maudlin Career, Tracyanne Campbell sings, "This maudlin career has come to an end/ I don't want to be sad again." As usual, she's being sincerely ironic. Camera Obscura fans will be pleased to know that she's still turning out maudlin torch songs with apparent ease. It is a record of the most immoderate sentiment: Thirty seconds in, on "French Navy", you've already got a dusty library, a French sailor, and the moon on the silvery lake. By the second track, "The Sweetest Thing", Campbell's ready to trade her mother for a compliment from a certain someone. She might not want to be sad again, but judging from the kind of tangled romantic assignations she confesses to here? Album number five already lurks in the inevitable fallout." ~ Pitchfork 8.3 "Best New Music"

New Books:

ANDY WARHOL: "GIANT" SIZE (HARDCOVER)
"A spectacular visual biography of the life and career of one of the most colourful and innovative artists of the twentieth century. Phaidon was granted unprecedented access to public and private archives and collections to collect this staggering quantity and array of material: a rare, behind- the- scenes look at the New York art world of the 1950s to the 1980s. With rare or unseen pictures of the New York glitterati over three decades along with receipts, letters, documents, family snaps, press cuttings and more, there is no better insight to the man beneath the wig. Introduction by renegade art critic Dave Hickey, who has his own cult following, and additional texts by Bruno Bischofberger, Ronnie Cutrone, David Dalton, Kenneth Goldsmith, Ivan Karp and Peggy Phelan. A must- have for Warhol fans and any pop culture enthusiast, it is now accessible to all, in this slightly smaller (but still quite massive) edition, and at this amazing new price. 8 3/4" by 11 3/8", 1400 color illustrations, 600 b&w illustrations."

LOST CONSTELLATIONS: THE ART OF TARA MCPHERSON, VOL. 2
"...compelling road map to the artist's most recent and ambitious journeys in paint, pencil, and sculpture. Tara and her work have been featured in numerous publications and websites, including Vanity Fair, Elle, The New York Observer, Juxtapoz, and Bust. Foreword by Tim Biskup. Hardcover, color."

RUSSIAN CRIMINAL TATTOO ENCYCLOPAEDIA VOL. 3 (HARDCOVER)
"This final volume of previously unpublished drawings and photographs completes the Russian Criminal Tattoo Encyclopaedia trilogy. Danzig Baldaev's unparallelled ethnographic achievement, documenting more than 3,000 tattoo drawings, was made during a lifetime working as a prison guard. His recording of this esoteric world was reported to the KGB, who unexpectedly supported him, realizing the importance of being able to establish facts about convicts by reading the images on their bodies. The motifs depicted represent the uncensored lives of the criminal classes, ranging from violence and pornography to politics and alcohol."

AND THE HIPPOS WERE BOILED IN THEIR TANKS (HARDCOVER)
"The legendary unpublished collaboration between William S. Burroughs and Jack Kerouac: a hard-boiled crime novel about a shocking murder at the dawn of the Beat Generation. Written when the writers were far from famous, And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks is an incomparable artifact from the early days of the Beats, a fascinating piece of American literary history, and a remarkable window into the personal lives of two hugely influential writers at the very beginning of their careers. It is also an engaging novel, a hypnotic descent into lust and obsession, drugs and alcohol, art and outsized dreams."

PUNK ROCK FUN TIME ACTIVITY BOOK
"Aye Jay, creator of the Gangsta Rap Coloring Book and the Heavy Metal Fun Time Activity Book, takes on punk with mosh- worthy results. This activity book will challenge kids and adults alike with word searches and drawing games, or just sharpen your crayons and color legends of punk's past and present! Help Siouxsie Sioux apply her makeup. Draw Henry Rollins' tattoos. Color in the members of Green Day, etc."

Prefuse 73 Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian CD now, LP soon (I hope)
For Everything She Touched Turned Ampexian, Herren rejected the idea of straight digital recording and instead went the much more intensive route of recording to analog Ampex tape, giving the album the sound of a lost tape of exploratory studio musicians from the not-too-distant past. In addition to the recording process, Ampexian also differs in its composition, existing as a tapestry of tracks of varying lengths and moods, albeit with a remarkable linear flow and, of course, unmatched rhythmic bump.

Bob Mould - Life And Times CD (Anti)

Ramblin' Jack Elliott - A Stranger Here CD (Anti)
Elliott is one of folk music's most enduring legends, influencing everyone from Bob Dylan and Pete Seeger to the Rolling Stones and the Grateful Dead. On ''A Stranger Here'' Elliott takes on depression era blues songs that have a particular resonance in these turbulent times. With his world-scarred voice wrapped around these dark songs of dark days, Elliott has made his masterpiece, and album at once elegiac and defiant, that can stand beside great late-career recordings by Billie Holliday and Frank Sinatra. Produced by Joe Henry (Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello, Solomon Burke).

The Hold Steady - A Positive Rage CD+DVD (Vagrant)
17 audio tracks recorded live at The Metro in Chicago. Enhanced CD links to download five bonus tracks. Bonus DVD includes a documentary.

Junior Boys - Begone Dull Care CD (Domino)

Black Dice - Repo CD (Paw Tracks)

I Was A King - I Was A King CD (The Control Group)
"Oslo, Norway's I Was A King debuted in 2007 with the album "Losing Something Good For Something Better". They were labeled "royally brilliant" and given 8 out of 10 by NME. The Independent, The Times, and The Guardian gave similar praise. This follow-up features performances by Emil Nikolaisen (Serena Maneesh), Sufjan Stevens, Daniel Smith (Danielson), and Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor). Mixed by Nick Terry (Primal Scream, The Libertines). Front man Frode Stromstad has a unique gift for creating addictive melodies with distinctive roots to the 60s distorted through the sound of the '90s."

Micachu & The Shapes - Jewellry CD/LP (Rough Trade)
21-year old Mica Levi, a.k.a. Micachu, presents ''an ear-bashing of crazy paving beats, junk shop punk, electronic drones, and deceptively mellifluous bedsit pop'' - The Times. Equally at home making brilliant leftfield pop as she is composing for orchestras and making mix tapes that mash up dub step, grime, garage, and pop, it comes as no surprise that Micachu's debut is the aural equivalent of a chameleon: a multi-colored, multi-layered conflation of ground breaking sounds and ideas. "Sideways-thinking pop genius." -- The Fly
